Job Description:

Performs preliminary screening of patients to include: visual acuity measurement, eye exam, visual fields (confrontation, Humphrey, Goldman & Tangent), applanation tonometry, ocular motility, papillary exam, slit lamp exam, keratometry, lensometry and refraction.  Performs specialized ophthalmic testing and assists in minor surgical procedures such as: color vision testing, A & B scan ultrasound, ophthalmic photography, fluorescein angiography, corneal topography and others. 

Logs and codes photographs and maintains a repository of photographic reports and teaching files.  Conducts screening examinations on clinic admissions.  Participates in research projects, assists in subject selection, develops photo layouts and conducts independent photo studies.

Job Requirements:

High School Graduate or General Equivalent Diploma (GED).  Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT) certification through Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).  Three (3) years of responsible ophthalmic work experience including some exposure to ophthalmic photography.  Certification by Ophthalmic Photographer's Society.  Must be able to stand, walk, sit, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, pull, reach, write, type, speak, hear, see (depth perception, color vision), calculate, compare, edit, evauate, interpret and organize for extended periods of time.  Strong commitment to quality customer service.  Proficiency in basic eye examination including medical and ocular history, external eye evaluation and refraction.  Must have good knowledge of ophthalmic photography to process and develop film.  Problem-solving skills with ability to apply sound judgment to the decision making process.  Organized work habits which include: attention to detail, ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks in a fast pace setting.  Present a professional image in manner, appearance, motivation and work habits.  Competence in both oral and written English.  Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials and the general public.
